Coping with Colic

There is no other way to describe it – colic is hard. It’s hard on baby but it’s equally hard on parents/caregivers. You can’t prepare for it and when it happens to your baby it can be devastating. It can be isolating, exhausting, stressful and tense. People around you may not understand and don’t know how to help. There’s no easy solution to coping with colic but below are some tips that may help.

  • As difficult as it is and as endless as it seems, colic does end eventually. While everywhere states that colic ends by the time your baby is 12 weeks old that isn’t always the case. It can last longer but it will always end. There will always be an end point. Cling on to that thought, one day this will be over.
  • Ask for help from those around you. It’s hard to ask for help but it can make a big difference to your wellbeing. Maybe you need someone to take baby from you for an hour or maybe you don’t want to be apart from baby but you need some help around the house. Whatever it is, ask.
  • Speak to your health visitor / midwife / GP. They can offer tips and advice and can also rule out any other medical conditions which may be causing the crying and discomfort.
  • Colic can be a trying time for yourself and your partner. You’ll be stressed and tired and it’s easy to get angry with each other. Talk to each other when you’re finding things hard and offer each other support even when it seems hard to do.
